Incremental not revolutionary
The frequent labelling of incremental technology products as revolutionary greatly bothers me.
The Oxford English dictionary defines revolutionary as “involving or causing a complete or dramatic change”.
During his interview at AllThingsD, Elon Musk (Tesla Motors, SpaceX, and PayPal) refers to the progress made by SpaceX in rocket technology as incremental with the aspiration of being revolutionary. However incremental SpaceX’s efforts, they are orders of magnitude more drastic than the latest trend in photo-sharing applications.
As makers of things we have to be humble and realise that most of our work is going to be incremental advances, with the seldom opportunity of being revolutionary.
